Bottle stops oil wastage

EVERY time you drink a litre of bottled water you're using 200 millilitres of oil, according to an environment report.

The Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security report said that Australians spend $385million on about 250 million litres of bottled water a year.

That number of bottles requires 141,666 barrels of oil to make the PET (polyethylene terephthalat) resin while another 314,465 barrels of oil is needed to convert the PET into bottles, as well as for for transport and refrigeration.

All this adds up to more than 60,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, about the same as amount as produced by 13,000 cars a year.

It is for this reason that Blacktown Council last week launched its own reusable drink bottle The Blacktown Bottle to encourage residents drink tap water.

The bottles will be distributed at council events.

Mayor Leo Kelly said: ``Council is combating the impact caused by the production of bottled water on the environment.

``Our reusable bottle can be washed, including in the dishwasher, and reused.''
